Fish activity & lake conditions notice
The district is aware of the recent fish die-off occurring within the Barefoot Lakes, as well as reports of fish swimming or gathering near the shoreline and lake embankments.
The primary concern at this time is low dissolved oxygen levels within the lake water. During extended periods of hot weather, drought conditions, and lower-than-normal water levels, lake temperatures rise, and the amount of oxygen available in the water decreases. Warmer water naturally holds less dissolved oxygen, which can place significant stress on fish.
When oxygen levels become low, fish will often move toward the shoreline or shallow areas where they may find slightly higher oxygen concentrations. This can cause fish to appear as though they are flopping along the embankment, swimming at the surface, or gasping for air. Unfortunately, prolonged low-oxygen conditions can result in fish mortality.
The District is actively monitoring the lakes and working with its lake-management professionals to evaluate water conditions. The lake aeration system is also being monitored and maintained to provide as much oxygen circulation as possible. However, aeration alone cannot always overcome the effects of prolonged high temperatures, reduced water levels, and drought conditions.
Residents may continue to see stressed or deceased fish while environmental conditions remain unfavorable. District staff and contractors will continue monitoring the lakes and addressing conditions as appropriate.
